Winter Skin Care Tips

For a lot of us, the cold of the winter not only brings just rosy red cheeks; it also brings itchy dryness to the skin. And for some, it is not just a tight dry feeling. Their skin gets so dry that is begins to flake, crack and even turns into eczema. Luckily, at Eastside Dermatology, we have products to cater to all levels of dry skin so you should never find yourself having to deal with dry skin again. If you are having dry skin issues, we have put together a list of 5 tips to keep your skin healthy this winter.

  1. Find a Trustworthy Dermatologist – If you go to the store to try and find the right type of moisturizer for your skin, you will most likely have a hard time finding it as there is no one to seek advice from. That is why it is such a good investment to see a dermatologist or esthetician. They can examine your skin type, figure out what issue is going on and will advise you on the proper skin care products to use.
  2. Moisturize More Often – Just because a moisturizer works well in summer and spring, doesn’t mean that it will perform the same in winter. As the weather changes, so should your skin care routine. Try to find a product that is oil based as opposed to water based because it will help create a protective layer on the skin that will retain more moisture.
  3. Don’t Forget Sunscreen – Sunscreen is not just for the summer time. With the combination of the sun and the snow, the glare can be damaging to your skin. Try to apply a wide ranged spectrum sunscreen to your face and hands about a half hour before going outside.
  4. Humidifiers Are Key – The minute you turn your heat on, your skin starts to dry out. Central heating systems blow out hot dry air throughout your home and office taking a ton of moisture out of the air. Humidifiers help add moisture to the air and will help prevent your skin from drying out.
  5. Limit Bath Time – When we find ourselves shivering in the cold, a good alternative seems to be jumping in the bath or shower and blasting the hot water for long periods of time. Although it may warm you up, it is not doing your skin any favors. The high heat of a bath or shower actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which causes you to lose moisture.

With these steps, we hope that you can enjoy your winter while not having to worry about itchy dry skin. If your skin tends to get dryer than normal, give us a call or contact us. We can help!

Factors of Lesions Caused by Psoriasis Found

We at Eastside Dermatology know how troubling having psoriasis can be for an individual. We offer treatments for all different severities of the disease.

Psoriasis is an uncomfortable and embarrassing skin disorder that causes skin cells to grow too fast, which results in thick, white, silvery, or red patches on the skin. Psoriasis affects roughly 3 percent of the world’s population. However, researches have recently found the underlying genetic factors that aid in the repair of skin lesions cause by psoriasis.

Dr. Bogi Anderson, who is a professor of biological chemistry and endocrinology at UCI, along with his colleagues, found out that a gene called grainyhead is responsible for triggering a repair pathway for psoriasis lesions. Grainyhead is known to be a major part in the epidermal development and healing of wounds. They also found that getting rid of this gene amplified the brutality and time of the embarrassing patches. But what does this mean?

These researchers learned that within psoriasis, there is a compound called grainyhead-like-3, which attaches to your DNA to help control the rate of transcription of genetic information from your DNA to the messenger RNA. Essentially, it arranges the initiation of an epidermal repair pathway. The gene was originally found in fruit flies, where it assisted in wound healing.

Researchers have also found out that it is easier to stimulate psoriasis like symptoms in mice that lack the GRHL3 gene. This means that the lesions did not disappear properly and remained visible even during an active immune suppression treatment, which is currently being studied for the disease.

This study shows us that an evolutionary epidermal repair pathway is created in psoriasis lesions and that this pathway helps tame the disease’s severity. It also helps clear up the lesions. Through this study, it is speculated that irregularities in this pathway may contribute psoriasis’s severity and that in the future this could help to treat the disease.

5 Things to Consider When Looking for a Columbus Laser Hair Removal Treatment

The popularity of laser hair removal has skyrocketed in the past few years. It has become an easy alternative to shaving, saving you time, money, and pain in the long run. However, there are some things to know before getting a laser hair removal treatment. Below you will find five things that you will want to consider before getting a laser hair removal treatment.

Understand How The Hair Is Removed – Emerging about ten years ago, laser hair removal is a technique that destroys hair at the root level using means of light with a specific intensity and wavelength. Melanin, which determines the color of our hair, absorbs the light’s energy and transforms it into heat, which kills the root of the hair without damaging the nearby areas.

What Type of Laser Is Best – Types of lasers vary and are effective in different ways dependent on the patient’s hair type. Different types of lasers can be combined during treatment or maximum results. Make sure that your dermatologist is using the best laser for your specific skin characteristics.

Your Skin Is Unique To You – Although laser hair removal is a common procedure, each person’s skin is different and this should be taken into consideration when seeking a Columbus dermatologist. If the characteristics of the individuals skin are not taken into consideration pre-treatment, there may be some complications including burns, scars, or pigment disorders. Our doctors at Eastside Dermatology take special care in analyzing each patient’s skin characteristics, and will determine the best possible treatment method for you and your skin.

Look Out For Special Offers – The popularity of laser hair removal has led to very competitive prices. Many dermatologist centers even offer special offers for the treatment. However, make sure that you choose a dermatology center whose staff will not only consider your skin and hair type, but also your medical history and overall health.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent – Yes. Laser hair removal is permanent, however a couple of treatments may be necessary to completely get rid of hair. However, keep in mind that this procedure is irreversible.

At Eastside Dermatology, our staff of laser hair removal specialists are highly experienced, and take the time to analyze each patients skin characteristics to bring them the best possible solution for treatment. If you have been considering laser hair removal and would like further information, contact our office and speak to a specialist.

5 Beauty and Health Tips for the End of Summer in Columbus

We at Eastside Dermatology know how important it is to be healthy. We also know that most people want to look as good as they can, and even though summer is quickly coming to an end, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the summer season and use it to your advantage. Below are five beauty and health tips that you can use to enjoy the remaining days of summer.

Eat for summer – When you eat water rich foods like cantaloupe, watermelon, tomatoes, celery, and lemons the water in it actually helps keep your body cool when it is blazing hot out. It will also help you feel less bloated.

Beat the sun – Some foods can actually promote protection against UV rays. Foods like tomatoes, carrots, watermelons, and greens contain lycopene and beta-carotene, which are phytochemicals and those help the skin block UV rays. But never forget sunscreen.

Get Outside – By taking your exercises outdoors it helps boost your self-esteem and lift your spirits, especially if you are somewhere by waterfalls, river rapids, or waves. The negative ions that concentrate here are good for your mood and energy.

Sweat more – Try a natural deodorant that allows your body to be able to sweat more. Sweating helps get rid of toxins in your body, which will make you feel better. Sweating also helps get rid of dirt and toxins in your pores. Sweating also helps keep your body cool.

Swimming – Summertime is a great time to enjoy a swimming pool. Pools with chlorine help fight acne-causing bacteria. It lowers the walls of bacteria cells and purifies the water molecules in your skin. Swimming is also a great workout. Make sure that you are properly protected from the sun if you are swimming outside.

While we recommend some great ways to naturally improve your body, we know that there are also times when this can’t fix certain cosmetic imperfections. The dermatologists at Eastside Dermatology offer a wide range of cosmetic and medical procedures including microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, liposuction, chemical peels, and many more. We also offer a variety of different products for your skin. Contact us today for any skin care needs.

Columbus Skin Care | Skin Cancer in Teens on the Rise

Although cases of skin cancer are on the rise, the number of teenagers using sunscreen has lowered. The doctors at Eastside Dermatology have noticed this increase, as more and more young people are coming in to be treated for skin cancer.

A study found that the percentage of high school students who wear sunscreen have gone from 67.7% in 2001 to 56.1% in 2011. That is nearly a 12% drop in one decade. Researchers at William Paterson University in New Jersey conducted the study.

Melanoma, the most dangerous of the skin cancer forms, has increased annually in men by 1.6% and 1.4% in women. You would think that as skin cancer cases rise, so would the awareness of teenagers using sunscreen. This, however, is not the case. This study indicates that there is a need for a greater drive to inform teens on the dangers of too much sun exposure.

In Australia, a public information campaign called “Slip Slop Slap” was held. In this event, free sunscreen was handed out at beaches. It was effective and helped increase protection from the sun and awareness of its dangers. Television ads are also showing beach goers wearing t-shirts and hats. “What we really need is to change the mindset that having this artificially tanned skin is attractive,” said Corey Basch, assistant professor of public health at William Paterson.

Although the amount of sunscreen use in teens is declining, the same goes for indoor tanning beds. From 2009 to 2011, the amount of teenagers using tanning beds dropped from 15.6% to 13.3%. Although it is on the decline, the decrease was too small to be considered significant.

Dr. Jeanine Daly, a dermatologist at North Shore-LIJ Health Systems said that she was surprised at the decrease in sunscreen use, despite all of the warnings about over exposure to UV light. She believes that the message that sun exposure can lead to skin cancer still is not getting through to teenagers, especially young girls.

When you are looking for a good sunscreen, make sure that it contains a physical sunscreen such as zinc or titanium dioxide as well as chemical sunscreen. Sunscreens with zinc are the best because they protect form both UVA and UVB rays. Also, remember that sunscreen doesn’t last all day. It should be re-applied every two hours. It also takes a lot of sunscreen to fully protected. A four to six ounce bottle that should last maybe one day at a beach will last a lot of people an entire season.

At Eastside Dermatology, we know how important taking care of your skin is and how dangerous exposure to the sun can be. That is why we offer to you Estion Sunscreen SPF 38. It was developed for people with sensitive skin, and is one of our hottest selling products. Estion Sunscreen SPF 38 is a creamy moisturizing sunblock that is PABA free. It is absorbed into the skin like silk and is made with Z-Cote, which is an ingredient that is amazing at blocking both UVA and UVB rays. This product is transparent, water-resistent, and unscented. Taking the initial steps to protect your skin is the best way to prevent long term issues.

Can Sunscreen Actually Burn You?

Most people wear sunscreen to protect themselves from getting burned. Well, according to the FDA, there have been “five separate incidents in which people wearing sunscreen spray near sources of flame suffered significant burns that required medical attention.”The FDA says that while sunscreen wearers should never apply sunscreen near an open flame, in these five cases the burns occurred after sunscreen spray had already been applied. Ignition sources varied from lighting a cigarette to standing too close to a citronella candle, and approaching a barbecue grill.
According to an ABC news story, “warning labels on popular brands such as Banana Boat tend to be general, saying, ‘Flammable: do not use near heat, flame.’ A previous release from Energizer Holdings Inc., which owns Banana Boat, announced the voluntary market recall of the continuous spray Banana Boat sun care products due to a potential risk of product igniting on the skin if contact is made with a source of ignition before the product is completely dry.”
At ESD, we think that the only thing you should worry about getting burned by is the sun, not your sunscreen!
