I’m Sara Taylor the Physician Assistant here at Eastside Dermatology.
A sudden or continuous change in the appearance of a mole is a sign that you should see your doctor. The A, B, C, D, E rule which I will be going over today can help you remember the signs of melanoma.
A, for asymmetry – one half is different than the other half.
B, for border irregularity – the edges are notched, uneven or blurred.
C, for color – the color is uneven; shades of brown, tan and black are present.
D, for diameter – diameter is greater than six millimeters or larger than a pencil eraser in size.
E, for evolving – a mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest or is changing in size, shape or color.
There are different ways to prevent melanomas. Minimizing exposure to sources of ultraviolet radiation such as the sun and tanning beds, following sun protective measures such as wearing sunscreen and sun protective clothing.
Hopefully these tips were helpful and if you have noticed any of these changes with your moles please make sure to make an appointment at Eastside Dermatology today.
