Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive way to exfoliate skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines, discolorations, and other imperfections. The results of microdermabrasion typically become more dramatic with repeated treatments.
Before your session, you will speak with the doctor or clinician to make sure that you are a good candidate for microdermabrasion. Individuals concerned about deep wrinkles or similar concerns may find that another skin care procedure, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, is better suited to their needs. On the day of the treatment, you should arrive at the treatment center free of facial make-up, lotions, or perfumes.
The doctor will start the session by wiping a cleansing gel or lotion over your face. This will remove any lingering traces of makeup and prepare the skin for deep exfoliation. Next, a hand-held suction device is placed over the skin. The tube gently draws small areas of the face into its opening, where the skin is exfoliated with tiny crystals. These crystals remove the topmost layer of skin, where dead skin cells and imperfections are found. Most patients find that the microdermabrasion procedure is virtually pain-free.
Once the entire face has been treated, the doctor will apply another lotion to remove any crystals that were left on the skin following the procedure. It also restores the skin to its proper level of acidity. After a final cleansing, your session will be complete.
Microdermabrasion patients typically have pink or red skin for a couple of days following treatment. It is important to avoid make-up and direct sunlight during the post-treatment period. Microdermabrasion is repeated at two to three week intervals for up to 12 sessions.
